This week I also have the pleasure of workshopping a beautiful new musical with an extremely gifted creative team, Gordon Leary (book & lyrics) and Julia Meinwald (music), and directed by the talented Mr. Ben Kamine.
As Ben put it, "PIED is a musical about anti-gay crusader, Anita Bryant, and the young man, Tommy Higgins, who famously threw a pie in her face at a rally. The show follows Anita as she hunts for stardom and finds it in religion (after looking in the Miss America pageant, the recording industry, and being a brand spokesperson) and Tommy as he sorts through his sexual identity and politics, ending in the climactic moment that joins the two of them in history." It's beautifully written, and the music is stunning! If you're interested in attending the reading on Sunday June 30th, feel free to contact me. Here we are already in the third week of cycle 15 of #Serials@TheFlea! "Joan Jett of Ark" (book & lyrics by Jeff Ronan and songs by Leo Caine, writer for Astro Cons) is going strong and I continue to have the privilege of playing Joanie's mother, who this week relives a beautiful moment from her past and sings a song chock full of dirty double entendres! Also, this week, we welcome insanely gifted director Nick Leavens to our group. He's doing amazing work with us. Come check it out and see four other brilliant plays in the process!
(For those of you who don't know what this crazy theater event is, check it out and purchase tickets on The Flea's website. Each evening consists of 5 ten-minute plays written and directed by amazing NYC playwrights and directors, and performed by The Flea's resident acting company, The Bats! Come check it out Thurs-Sat, 11pm at The Flea.) UPDATE! We were voted back in first place and will be returning in July!!! |
